  35. WHAT IS SERACTAL SCREENSAVER
  36. ----------------------------

  38. Seractal ScreenSaver is a screensaver for Windows 3.1 and Windows 95.
  39.  
  40. Seractal uses the beauty of fractals to create stunning full-screen designs
  41. while you are not using your computer.
  42.  
  43. After drawing a fractal, Seractal waits one minute before starting the next.
  44.  
  45. Supports 16 color VGA, 256 color SVGA, and 24-bit color.

  48. INSTALLATION
  49. ------------

  51. Windows 3.1
  52.  
  53. 1. From the directory you have decompressed into, copy the file seractal.scr
  54.    to your windows directory, usually c:\windows.
  55.  
  56. 2. Run Control Panel from the Main group in Program Manager.
  57.  
  58. 3. Double click on the Desktop icon.
  59.  
  60. 4. In the Screen Saver Section, under Name, select Seractal.
  61.  
  62. 5. Press Test to run the screensaver.
  63.  
  64. 6. Press Setup to display registration and support details, and access
  65.    configuration options.

  68. Windows 95
  69.  
  70. 1. From the directory you have decompressed into, copy the file seractal.scr
  71.    into your windows\system directory, usually c:\windows\system.

  73. 2. Click on Start, then Settings, then Control Panel.
  74.  
  75. 3. Double click on the Display icon.
  76.  
  77. 4. Click on the Screensaver tab.

  79. 5. In the Screen Saver list, select Seractal.
  80.  
  81. 6. Click Preview to run the screensaver.

  83. 7. Press Settings to display registration and support details, and access
  84.    configuration options.

  87. Once you have Seractal running, you do not need to keep the other files on
  88. your system. i.e. you just need seractal.scr installed in your Windows or
  89. Windows\System directory.

  91. SETUP OPTIONS
  92. -------------
  93.  
  94. Configuration options are available from the Control Panel/Desktop/Setup
  95. screen by pressing the Options button.

  97. REGISTERED VERSION OPTIONS
  98. --------------------------

  100. HIDE MOUSE
  101.     Selecting this option means the mouse cursor will disappear while the
  102.     screensaver is running.
  103.  
  104. STAY ON TOP
  105.     This is useful when you have a menu bar, clock, or other program which
  106.     normally stays visible over all other windows, including screensavers.
  107.     Select this option to have Seractal cover these windows. Its use is not
  108.     recommended if you have other programs running which can periodically
  109.     display a message (such as Mail, a Reminder or other scheduled program),
  110.     as you will not see these messages. Also in these cases, the other program
  111.     will have control of the keyboard, even though it is not visible, so
  112.     pressing Escape will clear the message rather than stopping Seractal, and
  113.     you will not get to see the message.
  114.  
  115. IGNORE MOUSE FOR WAKE-UP
  116.     Selecting this option means only use of the keyboard will stop the
  117.     screensaver. It's useful if your mouse likes to move of its own accord, or
  118.     is easily bumped. Not recommended if you are also using Stay on Top.

  121. PASSWORD PROTECTION
  122. -------------------
  123.     Password protection is only available in this version for Windows 3.1,
  124.     because under Windows 95, Control+Alt+Delete allows Seractal to be
  125.     cancelled.  The 32-bit version of Seractal allows passwords under Windows
  126.     95.

  128.     Warning: the security of your machine is not guaranteed when using the Seractal
  129.     password protection because due to the complexity of the screensaver and
  130.     different machine configurations, there is the possibility that Seractal may
  131.     crash and leave your machine available.

  134. RUNTIME OPTIONS
  135. ---------------
  136.  
  137. While the screensaver is running, the following keys can be used:
  138.  
  139. F5   The current drawing will Finish.
  140.  
  141. o    Displays an order form, which can be printed.
  142.  
  143. p    Pressing p will cause Seractal pause at the end of the current
  144.      drawing,  and not continue until you press 'p' again. This is useful, for
  145.      example,if Seractal is drawing something slowly, and you would like to
  146.      see how it ends up, but you have to leave the room for a while. Or if you
  147.      would like the chance to copy it to the clipboard when it's finished
  148.      before it gets overwritten. It doesn't pause immediately, but at the end
  149.      of the current drawing. When you have finished with the paused screen,
  150.      press 'p' again to start Seractal off again. (Registered version only)
  151.  
  152. +    If you are running in 256 color mode, then Seractal uses 'sliding' colors
  153.      to animate the image. Pressing + will increase the speed of the
  154.      animation.
  155.  
  156. -    Decreases the speed of the animation.
  157.  
  158. n    Stops all animation for the current run. Useful if it is too distracting
  159.      while you work.
  160.  
  161. SAVING IMAGES
  162. -------------
  163.  
  164. Pressing the PrintScreen function key will copy the full screen to the
  165. clipboard, and you can then paste that into a paint program and save the
  166. image. You can then cut an area from the image and use it as a background on a
  167. Web page.

  176. Seractal ScreenSaver is "try before you buy" software, and is provided with a
  177. free 14-day evaluation period.
  178.  
  179. When you register Seractal, it will
  180.     * display an even wider range of fractals.
  181.     * allow the use of run-time keystroke options listed above
  182.     * allow password protection (Windows 3.1 only)
  183.     * enable the mouse options
  184.     * remove registration reminder messages...
  185.  
  186. The screensaver displays a registration reminder message when the program
  187. finishes running.  On receipt of your registration fee, you will be mailed,
  188. faxed or emailed a code which will remove these messages.  This registration
  189. code is entered into the Registration field on the Setup screen.
  190.  
  191. Your support through registration is appreciated and will encourage the
  192. development of additional graphics and features.

  217. form can also be displayed and printed from the Control Panel Setup screen, or
  218. by pressing 'o' while Seractal is running.

  224. In order to keep the cost of Seractal low, diskettes are not sent.

  226. These prices and conditions are valid until 31st January 1998 for this version,
  227. and are subject to change with future versions.

  229. If you have already paid a fee to others (eg disk or CD vendors) to obtain
  230. this evaluation copy, that fee was for their copying and distribution
  231. services, rather than a payment for continued use of the program, and the
  232. software author does not receive any part of that fee.

  277. Credit card payments may also be made directly to Seraline, using VISA,
  278. Mastercard, or Australian Bankcard. A printable order form in MS Write format
  279. is in the file order.wri, which can then be faxed or mailed to Seraline. An
  280. order form can also be printed from the Control Panel Setup screen, or by
  281. pressing 'o' while Seractal is running.  The details required are your name,
  282. Credit Card type, card number, card expiry date and your signature.  These
  283. details can be mailed, or faxed to Seraline in Australia +61-2-9879-4481.

  285. When ordering directly from Seraline, credit cards are billed at exactly
  286. $19.50 Australian.  For other currencies, the amount appearing on your card
  287. will depend on the foreign exchange rate at the time. For example, at rates
  288. current in October 1996, this converts to an amount varying around US$14.50.

  291. EMAIL REGISTRATION
  292. ------------------

  294. Due to the number of different computers messages pass through on the
  295. internet, email security can be a concern.
  296.  
  297. We support PGP (Pretty Good Privacy) encryption for sending credit card
  298. details securely by email.  To receive our public key, send an email message
  299. to porum@ozemail.com.au with "send public key" as the subject. On receipt of
  300. our key, create a text message containing your name, credit card type (VISA,
  301. Mastercard, or Australian Bankcard), credit card number and expiry date. Use
  302. the separately available PGP software package to encrypt the message, and
  303. email it to porum@ozemail.com.au.

  305. If you don't have PGP, you may like to split the details over several
  306. email messages. Avoid mention of words like "credit card", and use an
  307. abbreviation for the credit card type, eg V for Visa or M for Mastercard.
  308. Send the expiry date in a separate message, and split the card number over
  309. several messages, but ensure there is some sequence number that makes it
  310. obvious to us what the sequence is.

  312. Emailing credit card details using any method is at your own risk.

  318. Seractal ScreenSaver is NOT a public domain program.  It is copyrighted by
  319. Seraline Pty Ltd.  This software and accompanying documentation are protected
  320. by Australian copyright law and also by international treaty provisions.
  321.  
  322. The registration fee will license Seractal ScreenSaver for use on any
  323. computers in your home, and on one computer at work on which you are the
  324. main user.
  325.  
  326. Seraline Pty Ltd grants you a limited license to use this software for
  327. evaluation purposes for a period not to exceed fourteen days.  If you continue
  328. using this software after the fourteen-day evaluation period, you MUST make a
  329. registration payment to Seraline Pty Ltd.
  330.  
  331. You may not use, copy, rent, lease, sell, modify, decompile, disassemble,
  332. otherwise reverse engineer, or transfer the licensed program except as
  333. provided in this agreement.  Any such unauthorized use shall result in
  334. immediate and automatic termination of this license.

  351. cause crashes, because of the extensive calculations and graphics and many
  352. permutations, it may still crash occasionally due to incompatibilities with
  353. video drivers.  You should use the evaluation period to check that
  354. Seractal does not cause problems with your system.
